Randox looks east to develop new business relationships

Representatives from global medical diagnostics firm Randox Laboratories have been reaching out to business partners in Russia this week, by accompanying world-renowned pianist Barry Douglas to his performance with the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia and its conductor Alexander Lazarev, at the Moscow Conservatory.

The healthcare company, which has headquarters in County Antrim, is the global sponsor of Barry Douglas and his Camerata Ireland orchestra. The partnership allows Randox to deliver on its commitment to showcase the wide variety of talent on the island of Ireland to a global audience – both through the arts and also through its own scientific expertise.

 Mark Campbell, Senior Manager at Randox Laboratories, commented;

“Accompanying the talented Barry Douglas to Russia allows Randox the opportunity to simultaneously support the promotion of our talented Irish musicians, while also strengthening key business relationships and promoting exports.

“We are proud to promote Northern Ireland to Russia as not only a country of rich musical heritage, but also an innovative and technologically advanced country continually investing in R&D, with a highly skilled manufacturing workforce.  We have been exporting to the health sector in Russia for over 20 years and we look forward to nurturing these business relationships and developing new ones.”

Barry Douglas, Founder and Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland, and winner of the 1986 International Tchaikovksy Competition, a classical music competition held every four years in Moscow, said;

“It is such an honour to be able to take to the stage in Moscow with the exceptionally talented Alexander Lazarev and the State Academic Symphony Orchestra. It is particularly meaningful for me to be back in the city where I made my name, in 1986. It is thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, particularly our global sponsor Randox, that I and my fellow musicians are able to continue doing what we love.”

Barry Douglas performed with The State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia on Wednesday 6th September 2017 in The Great Hall of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

We Are Randox | A year in the life of placement student Jenna Ireland

This week marks the end of the 2016/17 academic year for our Randox Placement Students. As we say goodbye and wish them luck for the future, we reflect on the year they have spent with us.

Jenna Ireland, a Business Management student from Ulster University, finishes her year-long placement tomorrow, Friday 11th August, before embarking on her final year of studies.

We sat down for a chat with Jenna to find out how she has found the placement experience, and what she wants to let students know about what it’s like to do a placement year with Randox.

This is what Jenna had to say:

I found out about the Randox Placement programme through our University Career Centre, as Randox has very close links with Ulster University.

I liked the sound of a company with such vast experience and a truly global presence.  The company has a fantastic reputation across Northern Ireland as a leading business and employer so I thought, where better to spend my placement year?

The international network at Randox was truly apparent as soon as I began to work here.  My colleagues in the team in which I was placed, which is the Sales Team for a number of specific regions including India, were so welcoming and supportive in spite of the extremely high-level careers they are in.  They made time for me and went out of their way to help me to settle into my role and life at Randox even though they are so busy managing the sales for so many countries!

I began my time at Randox with a full two weeks of training to ease me into what has been my first full-time job.  This gave me an overview of the company, the products and services I would be selling, the Randox ethos, the responsibilities of my job role, and the format of the placement programme.

I have also received training throughout the year on newly launched products to ensure total understanding of the technologies with which we are working.  I wanted to gain a really in-depth knowledge of our Randox products so I also took it upon myself to complete online training modules.

The role itself that I have had during my time here at Randox is Sales Support Executive. This has involved assisting our team with research tasks as well as introducing new mechanisms to be used by our team after I leave.  I have had the opportunity to really make my mark on the sales systems in place, by working on important projects including our organisational charts and our sales report, which is presented to Senior Management. I’ve also been involved in distributor relationship management, to make sure we always have the best partners in place for Randox.

I really feel like I’ve learnt a lot during my time here. I know that for some students in other organisations, during their placements they are unfortunately encumbered with the boring administrative tasks that more senior members of the team try to avoid, but it hasn’t been like that for me at all.  The responsibilities with which my manager Rebekah has entrusted me have given me a real insight into the role of a salesperson in a very dynamic and fast-paced environment.  I’ve loved meeting and interacting with members of our global team, as well as our distributors and customers.

My favourite moments during my time here have definitely been attending our Global Sales and Distributor Conferences.  Spending time with a wealth of Randox salespeople from around the world meant that I could lean on their advice and experience to learn what it means to be a good sales person.  I was able to talk to them about how to manage staff, about their tactics for increasing sales, and generally just get an overview of their roles and responsibilities.  It’s great to hear from our global sales staff about their country, their culture, their language.  There are such fantastic opportunities to travel at Randox which makes a sales job here so exciting.

Throughout my year at Randox I have had to submit two four-month reports to university, the first in October and the second in March, to assess and evaluate my placement.  My tutor also came out to Randox to have a face-to-face meeting with my manager and me to discuss how I have been getting on, and my Randox mentor met with me regularly throughout the year to make sure I had all the support I required.

At the end of my placement I then submitted a placement portfolio including a 5000-word report on my time at Randox. I had to explain everything that I had learnt here and how I put into practice the skills and knowledge I had gained from university.

University is a fantastic stepping-stone into the working world, but you truly start to learn what it means to have a career when you experience the industry you want to work in for yourself.  My final report for university was really useful because it enabled me to look back on my time here and reflect on what a fantastic experience it has been.

Not only have I grown in confidence, in my abilities and in my vocational development (simple things like writing professional emails and answering the phone in a polite and engaging way!) but I have also made some great friends.

Randox is such a friendly place and the team I have working beside me has been part of the reason I have enjoyed my time here so immensely.  We get on really well together and quite often we go out together for lunch on a Friday as an end-of-week treat.

As I finish up my time here (I can’t believe it’s been a year already!) I really want to take the opportunity to thank everyone at Randox for all their support over the year, and of course to thank my sales team for teaching me so much.

To my Line Manager Rebekah Tougher and to my Global Manager Paul Turnbull in particular I want to say a massive thank you for being such fantastic role models and for truly taking me under your wing and helping me flourish.

The first step in my Business Management career has been amazing and it’s thanks to the amazing team at Randox.

Now time to get my head back into the books for my final year of uni! Wish me luck!

Jenna

We wish Jenna and her fellow placement students all the best as they head back to university.  We might even see them return in the future as Randox graduates!

A group of 30 delegates from global healthcare company Randox Laboratories has this week travelled to the USA, to take part in the world’s largest diagnostics conference – in San Diego, California.

The American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC) Annual Meeting and Clinical Lab Expo, known as the leading event for laboratory medicine worldwide, is attended by over 20,000 delegates from across the globe, and offers Randox the opportunity to showcase their capabilities and to network with leading healthcare professionals and key decision makers.

Launching at this year’s event are a number of innovative and exciting new products, including a test for Acute Kidney Injury, a revolutionary diagnostic for small, dense low density lipoprotein (sLDL), a subtype of LDL cholesterol which is a vital risk marker for cardiovascular disease, and the latest in laboratory quality assurance software.

Chief Scientist at Randox Laboratories, John Lamont, who is heading up the delegation to the US, commented;

Our very significant investment in research and development means that we have more new tests in development than any other healthcare company in the world.  Each year at AACC we are able to bring a wealth of exciting new technologies to the American market, for a range of the world’s pressing health issues in need of the most urgent address. We look forward to showcasing our latest innovations at this year’s AACC conference, and to identifying further potential projects.”

Dr. Peter FitzGerald, Founder and Managing Director of Randox Laboratories, commented;

“We appreciate that post-Brexit there will of course be particular business challenges with regards to international business, but at Randox we will remain committed to developing new health diagnostic technologies in the areas where they are needed most, and to expanding the business in our key markets, such as the US.

“The USA is one of our most important markets and we have been exporting our diagnostic products there since the early 1980s. We will continue to nurture our presence there, the expansion of which will be supported by our soon to be opened facility in Kearneysville, West Virginia, which will enable us to strengthen our position in that market.”

AACC runs from the 30th July – 3rd August at the San Diego Convention Centre. Randox can be found at booth #3839.

Randox increases exports and secures new business in China

Following the launch of its new Chinese market expansion programme in December 2016, global healthcare diagnostics company Randox Laboratories has made significant strides in its business with China, successfully increasing its exports and enabling new business opportunities within the country.

The firm has just returned from a business trip to China to meet new distributors and customers acquired over the last six months, and to train this recently acquired distributor network on Randox’s latest healthcare technologies, with a key focus on the company’s RIQAS programme, the world’s largest External Quality Assessment scheme for laboratories.

Ying Zhu, Sales Manager for Randox Laboratories in China, commented on the success Randox has seen in China over the last six months;

“China is one of our key markets and although our world-leading diagnostic products have been sold there for more than 20 years, we continue to increase our business presence there thanks to increased output from our innovative R&D programmes, and enhanced manufacturing capabilities, including new facilities at the Randox Science Park, our new headquarters in County Antrim. These infrastructural developments have resulted in an increasing range of products which we can now offer to growing and dynamic markets such as China. This increasing range of products coupled with a growing market presence has significantly increased our business penetration and subsequent support to customers.”

Since the launch of the market expansion programme last year Randox has successfully secured distributors across four of the largest provinces of China and has partnered with key hospitals in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Wuhan.

Margaret Fick, RIQAS Scientist added;

“At our most recent training conference in China, in addition to the educational seminars I conducted with my colleagues, we were also delighted to be able to host several of our newly acquired hospital partners, who presented to our audience of current and potential customers on how their laboratories have benefited from our Randox Quality Control products. The use of testimonials from high profile individuals who have experienced the quality, efficiency and reliability of our products is accelerating our growth across China and this is set to continue over the coming months and years.”

Randox pledges commitment to business in Europe

Global healthcare firm Randox Laboratories has pledged its commitment to maintaining and developing its business relationships with Europe, as a group of 20 representatives from the diagnostics company have travelled to Greece this week, to take part in one of Europe’s largest diagnostics conference in Athens.

EuroMedLab, which is run by the European Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, is attended by thousands of healthcare professionals from across the globe, and offers Randox the opportunity to showcase their capabilities and to network with key decision makers.

Managing Director of Randox, Dr. Peter FitzGerald, commented on what the company hopes to achieve by attending EuroMedLab;

“We highly value the business we do within the European market and have successfully made a name for ourselves in the diagnostics industry in these countries. We already have a number of key sales offices and distribution centres in the likes of France, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Poland, but there is so much more we can do.  Attending key networking events such as EuroMedLab is vital because it allows us the opportunity to meet with our existing customers and partners, to nurture and develop these relationships, and of course establish new ones.”

At the EuroMedLab conference the delegation team of Randox scientists, business development executives and market researchers will be making a series of announcements and presentations for new products including an innovative stroke diagnostic, newly discovered biomarkers for coronary heart disease risk, and the latest in laboratory quality assurance software.

The team will also present for the first time the Evidence Evolution analyser, a biochip testing platform capable of delivering accurate results from more than 2600 tests an hour including, but not exclusive to, cancer surveillance, fertility, heart, nutritional, digestive and diabetes health.

Dr. FitzGerald continued;

“At Randox we invest up to 16% of our turnover in R&D and we therefore have more new tests in development than any other diagnostics company in the world.  This puts us in a very unique position in the market because our new developments, which are focused in areas where they are needed the most, successfully address the most urgent health issues.

“In light of recent political developments, there will of course be particular business challenges in Europe, but at Randox we will maintain our commitment to nurturing our relationships with key business partners in Europe and to seeking new opportunities in international markets such as the US.”

EuroMedLab runs from the 11th – 15th June 2017 at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre in Athens. Randox can be found at booth #13 in the Skalkotas Hall Foyer.

We Are Randox | Travis Lai returns home to Malaysia with Randox

Being part of a global company offers endless opportunities including career growth, international travel and the chance to relocate somewhere new and exciting, or to take your job back home!

Travis Lai, one of our business development executives for Randox Quality Control took the opportunity to relocate from London to Malaysia in order to be closer to his family back in December 2015! Read our Q&A below to find out what it’s like to work for Randox and how Travis enjoys being closer to his family and friends.

Hi Travis, can you tell us a little bit about your background working for Randox?

I have been with Randox now for nearly three years working as a business development executive for Randox Quality Control.  As part of my role I am constantly developing new sales leads, developing relationships with current and new customers, in charge of distributor management and planning and overseeing new marketing initiatives which all aim to grow the Quality Control division at Randox.

How did you find working in the London?

When I first started working for Randox I was based in the London Wall office. I had been to London a few times before I joined Randox and already knew a few people who were living in London which was nice. London is a very vibrant and multi-cultural city with lots to do and see. It was a big change for me in the beginning as it took me a while to get used to the food and of course the weather! I made sure to buy a raincoat during my first week!

What made you decide to relocate home to Malaysia?

I worked in London from April 2014 to Dec 2015 before I took the opportunity to return home to Malaysia due to a family concern. I had been thinking about it for a while and when the opportunity came Randox approved my application for relocation. I was very pleased that I was given this unique opportunity as it’s quite rare that employees are able to transfer from London to as far as Asia for a job role. But that’s one of the perks working in a global organisation, you get to experience things that you wouldn’t get the opportunity to do so elsewhere– I am extremely grateful that I got the opportunity to move back home for work.

Were you able to continue to work in the same job role once you moved home?

Yes, I was able to continue to work as a business development executive for Randox Quality Control which is great, the only thing that changed was my location.

What do you enjoy the most about being home in Malaysia?

I love being closer to my family and friends here at home, I think that’s probably the best thing for me I missed them a lot when I was living in London. It’s also great to get back to the sunny weather, Malaysia is quite warm all year around so there isn’t much of a need for a raincoat over here and I also love the food.  My favourite dish is called Nasi lemak, it is a Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and considered the national dish. In terms of work, it’s useful that I am closer to the end users and distributors. This really comes in handy when I need to get in touch with distributors urgently and I don’t have to worry about time differences.

If you are interested in joining our global team make sure that you check out Randox careers website to see what new opportunities we have for you.

Following 18 months of extensive market research and infrastructural developments, global healthcare diagnostics company Randox Laboratories has this week launched a new market expansion programme in Shanghai in China, to help develop and strengthen business relationships and increase exports.

To mark the roll out of the initiative, Randox is hosting a conference in Shanghai for its most recently acquired distributor networks, who will benefit from training on Randox’s latest healthcare technologies, designed to facilitate early and accurate diagnosis to improve patient outcomes.

Susan Hammond, Global Product Manager at Randox Laboratories, commented on Randox’s Chinese expansion plans at the company’s Shanghai training conference;

 “China is one of our most important markets and we have been exporting our world-class diagnostic products there for over 20 years.  With increased output from our innovative R&D programmes, and enhanced manufacturing capabilities, including new facilities at Randox Science Park, we have an increasing range of high quality products, which are in demand in growing and dynamic markets such as China.  We are now actively growing our market presence in order to improve our penetration and subsequent support to customers.”

Susan continued;

“Our infrastructural changes within the Chinese market have been in planning and development for the last 18 months and we are delighted that our support of the talented Camerata Ireland orchestra on their Chinese tour this month gives us the opportunity to visit key business partners while simultaneously supporting our young musicians in their careers.”

The Camerata Ireland Orchestra, whose joint patrons are Michael D Higgins, President of Ireland and Queen Elizabeth II, begin their tour on the 9th December in Shanghai, when the all-Ireland orchestra will perform a diverse tapestry of classical music, led by Camerata Ireland founder and 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition Winner Barry Douglas.

Barry Douglas, Founder and Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland said;

“Following a successful tour in China last year we are delighted to be back, and it is particularly special for our Solo Flautist Eimear McGeown as this tour marks her Chinese debut.  On behalf of everyone in Camerata Ireland I would like to take this opportunity to thank our global sponsor, Randox, without whom our international touring would not be possible.  We are delighted to be able to work together across the world to showcase our musical and business talent to a global audience.”

The Camerata Ireland tour of China is as follows: Friday 9th December in The Shanghai Grand Theatre in Shanghai, in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Bejing on the 10th and for the final installment of their China tour, Camerata Ireland will perform in the Wuhan Qintai Concert Hall in Wuhan.

We Are Randox | Life in Austin, Texas with Andrew Dunlop

As a global diagnostic company with employees situated in 145 different countries across the globe, working with Randox offers amazing opportunities for international travel, and even for relocating half way across the world!

Our aim is to revolutionise healthcare through innovative diagnostics and save lives, and we can’t achieve this aim without the support of each and every one of our employees who are situated throughout the world.

Recently we took the time to catch up with Andrew Dunlop, who relocated from our Headquarters in Crumlin to Austin, Texas, USA.

Hi Andrew, what’s your current job title at Randox?

Currently my job title is National Sales Manager for the RX Sales department at Randox. I have been working for Randox for over four years now and I am really enjoying my role. My main job responsibilities include selling RX instrumentation to clinical labs, research sites and education facilities while also managing staff who do the same.

Was relocating something that you imagined doing when you first started your career with Randox?

Relocating was always something that I thought may have been an option but wasn’t sure how realistic it would be. I was always encouraged to pursue international travel and I loved the idea of seeing how business was done in other parts of the world. Having previously lived in the USA for two years through an internship with another company before I started working for Randox, I loved the idea of returning someday but didn’t know if it would be possible. I didn’t know anyone who already lived in Texas but because I had travelled to Austin on so many occasions for business I knew it was a great city. As I was travelling quite frequently to the USA I brought up the possibility of relocating there which was fully supported by the company.

What happened in the first few weeks of your relocation? Did you face any challenges?

The first few weeks were fairly hectic: I had to source getting a new car, a driver’s licence and finding an apartment and furniture. Randox helped me settle in by putting me up in a hotel initially and they also bring me home at least once per year which is something that I always look forward to.

How are you finding living in a new culture?

I love the culture in the USA and I have got used to pronouncing words a certain way so people can understand me such as two, eight, hour and even Andrew. The American’s use different terms such as Cell Phone, trunk, Gas etc too. The weather is also great, blue skies and sun is the norm for me now. I am able to live an outdoor lifestyle in my spare time, go hiking, mountain biking, BBQs etc, the list could go on and on!

How are you coping living so far from home?

I miss family and friends a lot, but as time passes it becomes normal. But the company does fly me home once per year which is something I always look forward to.  I will have been home three times in 2016, but I wasn’t home at all in 2015.

Are you doing the same job in your new role?

My job role didn’t change significantly, I do a very similar job that I did before when I was located in Ardmore. Previously I managed staff who sold RX equipment in Brazil, Spain, UK and USA but now I purely focus on the US market. Plus being in the market has allowed me to understand it so much more and sales have really grown as a result which is a big plus!

What’s been the highlight of your move so far?

The highlight for me is being in a city that I truly love.

If you are interested in joining an international company that can offer you the chance to relocate to some of the biggest cities in the world, make sure that you check out our website for any current opportunities. We also offer a student placement program and graduate development program to help students and recent grads build the necessary experience needed to work within a global company.
