Randox Food Diagnostics are attending AOAC Denver 2019

Randox Food Diagnostics are exhibiting at AOAC in Denver. Various contaminants are administered to animals during the farming process to treat infection and maintain herd health. Regulations are often adhered to, as quality control procedures are put in place to ensure the safe supply of agricultural produce and this is where Biochip technology can streamline the quality control process. By offering a system that can analyse up to 48 sample simultaneously, our technology delivers higher throughput which in turn saves time and money on laboratory costs and labour.

Randox Food and Biochip Array Technology

Biochip Array technology (BAT) is designed with the aim of revolutionising the screening practices of your laboratory. Designed to work across a wide variety of matrices, BAT uses a micro-spotting technique to create an assay that can detect and provide quantitative results for up to 44 residues from a single sample.

The market leading 9mm x 9mm ceramic chip brings the capacity to detect the range of antibiotics, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, growth promoting and mycotoxin residues simultaneously in a range of food and feed samples.

AOAC’s annual meeting is taking place this September in Denver. The meeting organises scientific sessions, roundtable discussions, workshops and poster presentations discussing a variety of analytical methods and requirements. Attended by scientists from across the world the conference discusses science at a different level.

At AOAC Denver you will get the opportunity to speak to our experts on the Biochip Array Technology. By visiting booth #416 you will get an introduction to BAT and find out how the technology can perfectly fit any of your screening needs.

Diagnosing Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) with RCLS

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is an illness where plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries. The arteries play an important role in supplying oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles, however, over time plaque builds up and can harden. This results in the arteries becoming narrow due to not being able to deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to the heart which causes angina or a heart attack to occur.1

BHF highlighted that Coronary Heart Disease was one of the UK’s biggest killers in 2010 resulting 46,000 premature deaths of which 68% were men.2

CHD is more likely with increasing age, particularly in men. These risk factors cannot be changed, however, there are other risk factors that can be modified such as blood cholesterol, being overweight or obese, smoking, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet and stress.

You can prevent and control many CHD risk factors with heart-healthy changes and medication. Some lifestyles often increase the chance of developing the disease such as smoking, poor diet, adequate exercise therefore, there are many lifestyle changes to help control several CHD risk factors at the same time, such as physical activity which may reduce stress, lower your blood pressure, help control diabetes and help control your weight.3

Currently, there are four state of the art, fully functional ISO12025 accredited laboratories, located in Liverpool, London, Holywood and the Randox Science Park in Antrim giving RCLS the power to output to pharmaceutical, health and research markets.

Specialising in biomarker and multiplex testing in addition to standard safety and clinical testing, RCLS provides a full laboratory service to accelerate laboratory projects to completion. Our experienced project management teams are available to provide support and guidance from initial biomarker selection through to the design of a comprehensive results data package to deliver against your project aims and timelines.

Renowned for quality and reliability, the Rx Series and Evidence series are utilised by all RCLS Laboratories, guaranteeing real cost savings as well as highly-accurate flexible testing solutions. Furthermore, RCLS perform sample testing on numerous third-party analysers situated in our laboratories dependent upon the testing which is required by the customer.

RCLS can outsource the Cardiac Risk Prediction Array in their laboratory on the Evidence Investigator. We developed a rapid array which will allow all 19 SNPs to be genotyped simultaneously on one single sample. The RCLS team aim to save your laboratory time and money. By utilising our multiplex panels including the Cardiac Risk Prediction Array Panel, RCLS can offer labour saving, time reducing and cost-effective solutions for all your laboratory testing.

We Are Randox | Team Randox abseils Belfast Castle for AWARE NI

On Sunday 14th April 2019, a team of brave Randox colleagues faced their fears and took part in an abseil from the top of Belfast Castle. Scaling the heights of Cavehill, our fourteen daring Randox thrill seekers enjoyed views over Belfast before they stepped over the edge.

The event took place to raise funds for Randox’s charity partner AWARE NI, the depression and bipolar charity of Northern Ireland.

Congratulations to our abseil participants! While this may be something else ticked off the ‘bucket list’, it also, most importantly, is a fantastic effort in raising awareness and funds for the work of this very worthwhile cause.

Well done to everyone with your fundraising. You have all worked very hard and raised a fantastic amount both in cash donations and via JustGiving –  around £2200 so far and counting!

We hope you enjoy the photographs from the day. If you would still like to donate, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/teams/randox-aware-belfast-castle

Once again, many thanks on behalf of both Randox and AWARE NI to the Randox abseilers for their enthusiasm and fundraising efforts on behalf of both Randox and AWARE NI.

For more information about the abseil or our charity partnership with AWARE NI, please contact RandoxPR@randox.com.

Understanding Type 2 Diabetes with Randox Health

According to Diabetes UK about 90% of people in the UK with diabetes have type 2, leaving only 10% with type 1. So what are the causes of type 2 diabetes? To be able to live we all need insulin. Insulin allows glucose in our blood to enter our cells to give us energy.

However, if you have type 2 diabetes the body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose but because the insulin does not work correctly, it releases more insulin. This can cause the pancreas of some people who have type 2 to diabetes tire out and cause their body to make less and less insulin. As a result this causes even higher blood glucose levels.

So what happens when your body can’t get enough glucose into its cells? You’ll start to show symptoms. The most common is tiredness due to the lack of energy from not getting glucose in your cells. A lot of people don’t experience symptoms but some others experience needing to pee a lot, feeling extremely thirsty, cuts healing slowly, and contacting infections such as thrush. Diabetes UK say that some people live with type 2 diabetes for up to 10 years before being diagnosed.

THE COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES

Having diabetes can cause complications in other parts of your body. Over a long period of time, high glucose levels in your blood can cause serious damage to your:

  • heart
  • eyes
  • feet
  • kidneys

New figures coming from Diabetes UK, have shown the number of children and young people up to age 25 in the UK that have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is 6,836. These figures are shocking because type 2 diabetes had previously been virtually unknown in young people. But why is this and how do you know if you’re at risk of getting type 2 diabetes?

ARE YOU AT HIGHER RISK?

  • Your risk increases with age. You’re more at risk if you’re white and over 40 or over 25 if you’re African-Caribbean, Black African, or Asian.
  • You’re two to six times more likely to get Type 2 diabetes if you have a parent, brother, sister or child with diabetes.
  • Type 2 diabetes is two to four times more likely in people of South Asian descent and African-Caribbean or Black African descent.
  • You’re more at risk if you’ve ever had high blood pressure.
  • You’re more at risk of type 2 diabetes if you’re overweight, especially if you’re large around the middle.

The main cause of people developing type 2 diabetes is because of bad lifestyle choices. An unhealthy lifestyle with poor diet is causing more people to become overweight or obese. This is giving them a much higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

A STUDY BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION FOUND THAT:

  • 58% of women were obese or overweight.
  • 68% of men were obese or overweight.
  • 1 in 5 children were obese or overweight.
  • 1 in 3 children were obese or overweight.
  • 617,000 admissions to the NHS where obesity was recorded as a factor in 2017, up 18% on 2015/16.
  • 26% of adults are obese.

These are worrying statistics but you can lower your chances of developing type 2 diabetes by changing your lifestyle. You can reduce your risk by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a well-balanced diet and being more active. You can be prediabetic and turn things around to avoid becoming diabetic. Randox has helped clients do so by identifying prediabetics with our preventive health checks.

RANDOX HEALTH

Randox Health packages will give you a comprehensive look into your health, not only now but how it could look in the future. We’ve helped previous clients overcome being prediabetic and change their future health. We can help you if you have any worries about being prediabetic or if you have any other health concerns.

Randox Evidence Series highlights National Heart Month in February

National Heart Month is held every February to raise awareness and remind the public of the importance of taking care of your heart. Every day, your heart will beat approximately 100,000 times and it is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes. 1

British Health Foundation (BFH) states that over 7 million people are living with heart and circulatory disease in the UK: 3.5 million men and 3.5 million women. 2

There are many different heart conditions and problems that can arise which include angina, heart attack, heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms, congenital heart disease and inherited heart conditions which are highlighted further below:

Angina is a chest pain which is often caused when the coronary arties become partially blocked. It causes an uncomfortable feeling of heaviness or tightness which is often mistaken to indigestion. 3

Whereas a heart attack is when the arteries are completely blocked which can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle therefore, it is essential to be aware of the symptoms. The signs are similar to angina although it is more severe. This may include feeling pain in the arms, jaw, neck and back, lightheadness, sweating, nausea and breathlessness. 3

Heart failure is the most dangerous condition. It often occurs when the individuals heart is too weak to pump blood around the body making it difficult for the person to breathe. There are two types of heart failure. Acute heart failure which can occur suddenly or chronic heart failure which develops over time. 3

Being aware of the different types of heart disease and the symptoms can save a person’s life in the long-run. There are many ways to avoid developing heart disease. One of the simple changes could include having a healthier diet to reduce your risk of developing heart disease and maintaining a healthy weight. A healthy diet could include plenty of fruit and vegetables, starchy food, choosing whole grain varieties, including some dairy products and a small amount of fat and sugar in your diet. Exercising regularly can benefit your heart and its health, making small changes to your lifestyle can make a difference for example, walking to work or school instead of driving or taking public transport, taking the stairs instead of using the lift or even taking on a hobby! Quitting smoking, decreasing your alcohol intake, eating healthier and exercising more will make a huge impact to your health!

Randox offer the Cardiac Risk Prediction Array on their Evidence Investigator.  We developed a rapid array which will allow all 19 SNPs to be genotyped simultaneously on one single sample. The genotype information is then put into an algorithm which weights each SNP and calculates a CHD genetic risk score. This score is combined with common risk factors and an overall CHD risk score is calculated. A SNP which can predict response to statin therapies is also included. The results are easy to interpret using our Evidence Investigator which allows for more accurate classification and prevention actions to be taken.

Randox Health: Looking After Your Heart

This February, Randox Health are focusing on Heart HealthHeart health is becoming a much greater talked about subject because of health trends and figures. There are around 7 million people living with heart and circulatory disease in the UK. Heart and circulatory disease causes more than a quarter (26%) of all deaths in the UK; that’s nearly 160,000 deaths each year – an average of 435 people each day or one death every three minutes. Facts like these from BHF show us how how important our hearts are! Maintaining and having a healthy heart is essential to cut down your risk of heart disease.

Ways to Improve your Health

There are a number of things you can do to lower your risk of getting heart disease, and at the same time improve overall health. Lets look at three ways to lower your risk and help you become healthier:

  • Managing a healthy weight
  • Eating healthier
  • Getting active

What You Can Do

All three of the above will lower your risk of heart disease and all are linked so by improving one it will help the others. To manage a healthy weight, first you need to work out what a healthy weight is for you. There are two main ways to tell whether you need to lose weight: your Body Mass Index (BMI), and your waist measurement. the risk of heart disease begins to increase at a BMI of 23, and people with a BMI of 27.5 will be at high risk.

Men with a waist of over 94 cm are at an increased risk of heart diseases and over 102 cm are at a severe risk. Women with a waist over 80 cm are at an increased risk and at 88 cm are at a severe risk. If you fall in these risk areas, eating well and being more physically active can help you reduce your weight.

Healthy Eating

A healthy diet can help reduce your risk of developing coronary heart disease and stop you gaining weight. This also reduces your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. A well-balanced diet should include at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. Try to vary the types of fruit and veg you eat.

You should try to replace saturated fats with small amounts of mono and polyunsaturated fats. Try and cut down on foods that contain trans fats as it can raise your cholesterol levels. Lowering your salt intake can improve your blood pressure and lower your chance of coronary heart disease. Eating a healthy well-balanced diet can make it a lot easier to control and maintain your weight.

Get Active! The BHF say that physical activity can help reduce your risk of heart and circulatory disease. It also links in and helps you control your weight! Being active reduces blood pressure and cholesterol and can even improve your mental health. If you do all three of these points not only will it lower your risks of heart disease but will improve your overall health!

Randox Biosciences and Mental Health & Wellbeing Month

Mental Health Day is held every year on the 10th of October since 1992 1 to raise awareness and support against the stigma. 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience mental illness each year 2.

“Everyone has mental health. It involves our emotional, psychological and social well-being and it affects how we feel, think and act” 3 Mental Health can also affect an individual’s daily life, relationships and physical health. Lives are taken as a result from mental health therefore it is vital that we acknowledge the syndromes of mental health in order provide help and support.

We Are Randox | Team Randox scales the heights of Victoria Square for AWARE NI

On Sunday 21st October 2018, a team of brave Randox colleagues faced their fears and took part in a ‘freefall’ abseil from the dome of Victoria Square, Belfast. Scaling the heights of the 147ft, almost 45m drop, our fourteen daring Randox thrill seekers enjoyed views over Belfast before they stepped over the edge of the lilypad and ventured down to the ground floor of one of Belfast’s most recognisable structures.

The event took place as part of Randox’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Month throughout October, which sought to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing among staff members while fundraising for our two charity partners – AWARE NI and Ulster University’s Mind Your Mood. Events in the month have not only included a Victoria Square abseil but also a Wear Yellow Wednesday for World Mental Health Day, a fundraising coffee morning and internal fundraising bake sales along with yoga and relaxation class offers for staff members.

Congratulations to those all abseil participants! While this may be something else ticked off your ‘bucket list’, it also, most importantly, is a fantastic effort in raising awareness and funds for the work of AWARE NI, Northern Ireland’s depression charity.

Well done to everyone with your fundraising. You have all worked very hard and raised a fantastic amount –  around £2000 so far and counting!

We hope you enjoy the photographs from the day. If you would still like to donate, please visit https://www.justgiving.com/companyteams/RANDOXAWARE

Taking Care of your Physical and Mental Wellbeing

This month is Mental Health & Wellbeing Month at Randox. Throughout the month, we’ll be highlighting how you can take care of your mental health and wellbeing to not only improve mood and self-esteem but also to promote the many physical health benefits associated with good mental healthcare.

Mental wellbeing is as important as physical health. For complete health and wellbeing, both must be given equal attention as one affects the other. When you’re in pain, your mental health will also be under strain as mindset plays a role in our pain threshold capacity. When you are under mental stress, your physical health can also pay the price. Such is the case for anxiety sufferers who quite often report stomach and bowel issues as a consequence.

At Randox Health our health checks are the most advanced in the world, helping to extend your life through the world’s most advanced technology. Testing up to 350 different markers of irregularity, deficiency and disease in the body, we can give you the most comprehensive picture of your overall health and wellbeing available.

Mental health issues, such as low mood, anxiety and depression, can sometimes be aggravated by certain deficiencies such as a shortage of vitamin D. While supplements are unlikely to eradicate a serious mental health issue, they may help to improve symptoms and should be a first-resort before more advanced treatment, such as antidepressants, are prescribed.

At Randox Health, you can be sure of the most advanced testing – including the areas of vitamin and mineral levels. Mental health and physical health are deeply connected. Make sure you know all you can about your physical wellbeing in order to address your mental wellbeing in the most informed and comphrehensive manner.

Visit https://www.randoxhealth.com/ or call 0800 2545 130 to find out about Randox Health programmes available.
